SMS and pagers have the following problems:
- Lack positive message acknowledgement/accountability
- Delivery success and time can be inconsistent
- Limited content (message size and unstructured text)
- Must acknowledge using a different device and/or application, thus hindering collaboration
- Must use another device or application to research the alarm. No easy way to interact with the SCADA system and no real-time query
- Does not use GPS to determine notification recipients
- Understanding the overall situation requires reviewing multiple messages to construct a mental model
